Sticky Wilds
A standard wild substitutes for other symbols to help form a win. A sticky wild goes a step further and stays in place for more than one spin or cascade.
Sticky wilds commonly appear during free-spin rounds, respins, cascading sequences, and Hold-style bonuses. The longer a sticky wild remains on the board, the more chances it has to contribute to another combination. Some titles attach a multiplier to sticky wilds as well, which may stay fixed, increase with each win, or combine when multiple wilds land in the same result.
Walking, Moving, and Shifting Wilds
A walking wild moves across the reels between spins or respins, shifting one position left, one position right, up, down, or diagonally between adjacent spots depending on the game. A respin is often awarded after each move, letting the wild stay active until it eventually leaves the play area.
This turns a single static symbol into a short sequence you can follow, watching how it shifts and interacts with each new reel result along the way.
Stacked and Stacked-Wild Symbols
A stacked symbol occupies several consecutive spaces on the same reel. When matching stacks land across multiple reels, they can create combinations across many paylines or ways to win at once.
A fully stacked wild covers every visible position on a reel and can substitute across several winning patterns simultaneously, which is why stacked symbols tend to stand out most in games with expanding reels, respins, or free-spin rounds.
Mystery Symbols
Mystery symbols land as identical, covered icons and reveal the same underlying symbol at the same time. Once revealed, they might turn into a regular paying symbol, a high-value symbol, a wild, a bonus symbol, or a cash value.
Their purpose is largely to build suspense while potentially placing a large number of matching symbols on the board all at once. Some titles use large mystery blocks covering several grid positions, where every space in the block becomes the same symbol once revealed.
Symbol Transformations
Transformation mechanics convert one symbol type into another. A game might randomly select a symbol and change every matching copy on the reels into a higher-paying symbol, a wild, a scatter, or another symbol already present on the board.
Transformations can create combinations that weren’t visible when the reels first stopped, and in grid-based slots, they can also merge separate groups into one larger cluster.
Expanding Symbols
An expanding symbol grows to cover several positions, sometimes an entire reel. Expansion might trigger whenever the symbol lands, only when it contributes to a win, during free spins, or after a random modifier or mystery reveal activates it.
Some expanding symbols also act as wilds, while others remain ordinary paying symbols. The feature shows up especially often in free-spin rounds, since one expanded symbol can cover multiple paylines or create several ways-to-win combinations at once.
Symbol Removal and Destruction Mechanics
Some slots clear selected symbols even outside of a standard cascade sequence. A feature might destroy all low-paying symbols, remove symbols surrounding a wild, clear an entire row or column, or eliminate one chosen symbol type to make room for new ones to fall.
These mechanics reshape the board and trigger another evaluation of the result, and they show up most often in grid-style slots, where clearing several positions can meaningfully change the available clusters.
